Choose whether Answer Choice Explanations are displayed to a respondent by default or in a popup

You can choose whether the Explanation for an Answer Choice to a Multiple Choice Question appears to a respondent as

  • text displayed next to the question

  • or in a popup that is shown if the respondent clicks the Info symbol next to the question

Restrictions

  • The Survey Editor only lets you choose how the Explanations for each Answer Choice are displayed.

  • You cannot add or edit the Descriptions themselves from here.

  • To add or edit the Descriptions for each Answer Choice, go to the Edit Multiple Choice Tracker page for each of the Multiple Choice Questions in your survey.

  • When the Complete A Survey page loads, the Description text for each Answer Choice is displayed below it automatically

Considerations

If you are using Survey Personalisation (Personalised Wording of Survey Questions and Answer Choices), you should toggle the Answer Choice descriptions from the Personalised Wording page: Personalise the Wording of Survey Questions based on the Wave and Respondent Type

Steps

  1. Access the Edit Survey Template page

  2. Look at the box for a Multiple Choice Question

  3. By default the Display Description is set to On mouseover.

    1. This means that an Info symbol will be displayed next to the Answer Choices that have an Explanation added to them.

    2. When a survey respondent hovers over the Info symbol or clicks it, they will see the Explanation in a small popup.

  4. Select Automatically if you want the Explanation to be displayed by default next to the Answer Choices for that question

  5. This setting is applied one-by-one for each Multiple Choice Question in the survey so you can have different settings for different questions as you see fit.

  6. Scroll to the bottom and press Save
