There are four parts to setting up survey verdicts.

Makerble will generate one Total Survey Score for each respondent

The Respondent’s Total Survey Score is calculated is based on the Formula you add to the survey (that’s what this article explains).

Assign points to the Answer Choices of each question

• Let’s say you have a survey that’s made up of 3 questions.

• For simplicity, each Question will only have 2 possible Answer Choices.

• We will allocate Points to each Answer Choice. (allocating Points to each Answer Choice is what you covered in step 2: Allocate points to each survey question's Answer Choices )

• Question 1: What's your favourite food? has 2 answer choices

  • Cake = 2 points

  • Chocolate = 3 points

• Question 2: what's your favourite drink? has 2 answer choices

  • Orange Juice = 5 points

  • Lemonade = 12 points

• Question 3: what's your favourite place? has 2 answer choices

  • Beach = 20 points

  • Forest = 35 points

Create a formula to calculate a Total Survey Score for each respondent

• Now you need to set a formula that can be used to calculate a Total Survey Score for each respondent.

• The formula can be extremely simple, e.g. simple additions, or you can make it more complex by using

  • Multiplying

  • Dividing

  • Subtracting

  • Brackets

  • as well as Adding

• For example it could be Total Survey Score = Points from the answer to Question 1 multiplied by the Points to the answer to Question 2 minus 7 divided by Points from the answer to Question 3. But that's quite complicated! Although it is doable.

• So let’s go with a simple example for now.

• Let’s say the formula you want to use is "Total Survey Score = Points from the answer to Question 1 + Points from the answer to Question 2 + Points from the answer to Question 3",

• You’ll add that formula using the Formula Popup on the survey’s page

• Once you press save, Makerble is able to start calculating a Total Survey Score for each respondent.

Calculate a Total Survey Score

• Let’s imagine that James is one of your respondents. His answers to the three questions in the survey are as follows:

  • Favourite Food = Cake

  • Favourite Drink = Orange Juice

  • Favourite Place = Forest

• Makerble already knows the Points to allocate to each of these Answers. The points would be

  • Favourite Food = Cake = 2 points

  • Favourite Drink = Orange Juice = 5 points

  • Favourite Place = Forest = 35 points

• Using the points, Makerble can now use your Formula to calculate the Total Survey Score for each respondent.

  • Given that the formula is: Total Survey Score = Question 1 + Question 2 + Question 3

  • Then plugging in the points for James looks like this: Total Survey Score = 2 + 5 + 35 = 42

  • So now we know the Total Survey Score for James is 42.

Convert the Total Survey Score into a Verdict

• Let’s say that for the type of work you do, you consider

  • a Total Survey Score between 0 and 30 to be a FAIL

  • a Total Survey Score between 31 and 40 to be a PASS

  • and a Total Survey Score between 41 and 100 to be a MERIT

• Makerble will let you include those verdicts of Fail, Pass and Merit, within your survey so that they can be pronounced automatically based on each respondent’s Total Survey Score. (This is what is covered in step 4: Assign a verdict to each range of scores)

Steps: how to add a formula to a survey

1. Go to the Edit Survey page of the survey you want to calculate verdicts for (or stay on the Create Survey page if you are continuing from Part 2 and you have not yet pressed Save)

2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page

3. Press the text that says Advanced to open the Advanced Settings section

4. In the Formula section, press the Add Component button

5. This causes a popup to load

6. Within the popup: select Number

7. Then enter '1'

8. Then press Save in the popup

9. The popup closes

10. Scroll to the bottom of the page and press Save

11. You arrive on the Survey Template page

12. On the left of the Survey Template page is the Formula box. Click the Edit button

13. A popup appears. Press the Add coefficient button

14. Select the first dropdown list

15. Start the formula with a Number or an Indicator (an Indicator is a Multiple Choice question [progress tracker])

16. Based on the option you choose in the first dropdown, the option on the right side will update accordingly to allow you to

    1. Select a mathematical symbol: Plus, Minus, Multiply, Divide

    2. Select a multiple choice question

    3. Enter a number

17. Press the Add coefficient button again to enter the next part of your formula

18. When you have finished adding the formula, press Save in the popup

19. The popup closes

20. The formula that you have added is now displayed within the Formula box on the left of the Survey Template page
