Changes, Indicators and Outcomes
The term “Progress Tracker” is a single term that is used in the front-end to describe all of these items in the back-end. Collectively these are sometimes called Metrics.
Changes (there are two types: Activity and Participation)
Indicators (there are three types: Binary, Scale and Value). Every indicator must belong to at least one outcome.
Outcomes (they can exist in one, two or three Stages. The stages are: Short-term, Medium-term and Long-term). An outcome can contain many indicators.
Front-end term | Back-end term |
---|---|
Activity Tracker | activity metric |
Attendance Tracker | participation metric |
Achievement Tracker | Binary indicator |
Multiple Choice Tracker | Scale Indicator |
Numerical Tracker | Value indicator |
When to use each type of metric
Type of metric |
|
Activity Change | Use this to track the number of each type of activity or event you do. Examples: “Sessions Run”, “Events Held”, “Workshops Delivered” |
Participation Change | Use this to track people’s attendance at your activities and events Example: “Attendees” |
Outcome | Use this to describe the difference that your work makes Example: “People increase their confidence” |
Binary Indicator | Use this to track an individual’s progress using a tickbox. This is useful when a subgoal is binary, i.e. it is either Yes or No Example: “Got a Job”, “Got an Increase in Benefits”, “Got a new home” |
Scale Indicator | Use this to track an individual’s progress along a scale with a set of predefined levels. Example: “Level of confidence.” With levels: Low, Medium, High |
Value Indicator | Use this to track an individual’s track progress using a number. Examples: (Number of) “Presentations given”, (Number of) “Ideas proposed” |

Rules that govern where Changes, Outcomes and Indicators appear
Name in the back-end | Rules | Name in the front-end |
---|---|---|
Change | In order for a CHANGE to appear on a Project Page, it must be in Stage 1 or Stage 2 If it is in Stage 1 it is called an Activity Change. (The back-end name for Stage 1 is Activity Outputs) If it’s in Stage 2 it’s called a Participation Change. (The back-end name for Stage 1 is Participation Outputs) | Now we are using the term “Progress Tracker” We call the STAGE 1 changes an “Activity Tracker” We call the STAGE 2 changes an “Attendance Tracker” |
Indicator | Must be of one of three types:
In order to appear in the Create Story page or to be added to a Project, the indicator must be part of an Outcome | We call the indicators “Progress Trackers” - each type has a different name Scale Indicator = Multiple Choice Tracker Binary Indicator = Achievement Tracker Value Indicator = Numerical Tracker |
Outcomes | Must be in Stage 3, Stage 4 or Stage 5. Stage 3 is called Short-term otucomes in the back-end Stage 4 is called Medium term Outcomes in the back-end Stage 5 is called Long-term Outcomes in the back-end | These are called “Outcomes” in the front-end as well as in the back-end |
